Welcome to the Stamping With Friends Blog Hop. Today we are hopping with “Blogger’s Choice” as our theme. I have created a couple of cards using water color and the emboss resist technique. I hope it will inspire you to give this technique a try.

This card combines two of my favorite techniques. I love both water coloring and heat embossing. This card features the Natural Botanicals stamp set and the colors Granny Apple Green and Azure Afternoon. I diluted these colors with lots of water and spritzed the embossed background before water coloring to help the color “flow.”

For this card, I also used the Natural Botanicals stamp set but I heat embossed in black and water colored with much less diluting of the colors. I also did not spritz the background before coloring. The ink tends to stay in one place without “flowing” when coloring on a dry background. For both cards, the Happy Birthday is from the Tune In stamp set.
Do you prefer one over the other? I”d love it if you’d tell me in the comments below.
instructions for the WaterColor and Emboss Resist Birthday cards
- Cut a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ card base and score at 4 1/4″.
- Rub the embossing buddy all over your piece of 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ THICK Basic White card stock. (We will trim it later.) Note: THICK is necessary so the paper will not “pill” and become overly saturated.
- Stamp your design with Versamark. For ease of stamping I placed four stamps on a large block. Sprinkle your background with either white or black embossing powder. Melt using your heat tool.
- Press a small block into the Granny Apple Green ink pad. Using your water painter, squeeze 1-2 drops of water from your water painter onto the block and mix.
- Repeat step 5 for Azure Afternoon and Poppy Parade (if desired.).
- Lightly Spritz the background with water.
- Color in sections of the background with one color. Add more water or pull in more ink to make the color lighter or darker.
- Continue with the other color(s).
- When satisfied with the background dry it a bit with your heat tool.
- Splatter drops of one color on the background.
- Trim your background to 3 7/8″ x 5 1/8″ and use Tear & Tape to adhere it to a mat cut 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of card stock. (If not matting the background, trim to 4″ x 5 1/4″.)
- If desired wrap this piece twice with twine and tie a bow.
- Use more Tear & Tape to adhere the mat to the card front.
- Die cut the Pie Plate circle (approx 2″) from the Spotlight on Nature dies.
- Use Azure Afternoon ink to stamp Happy Birthday.
- Die cut the long, thin banner from the Stylish Shapes dies, if desired. Adhere to the back of the circle.
- Use dimensionals to adhere the sentiment to the card front.
- Add several sequins from the Purple Adhesive Backed Sequins Sale-a-bration freebies.
